This game is my first attempt at developing for mobile. To fit the target market for mobile games, I made the game laid-back and casual friendly through a colouring game. Many colouring games already exist on mobile, but I specifically designed this to fit the interface - the controls focus on swiping across the screen to reveal colours.

The primary focus of this project is to create something that can be a passive and relaxing experience. I studied the types of games that create this experience - such as sudoku, solitaire, and minesweeper - and took inspiration from them.

Specifically, the concept of gradually revealing the level over time stood out from these games. I combined this with the swiping-to-colour system to develop the idea for Colour Maze.

Mobile development is something I don't see a lot of my peers talk about. This is a shame, because not only is it a massive market, it also is a unique market with unique design needs. I'm glad I've been learning how to design games for mobile, and I think this experience will make me a better and more well-rounded designer overall.

Colour Maze is designed to draw the player into a relaxed, submissive flow state. To achieve this, the Core Loop needs to transition smoothly and intuitively between phases, without major challenge.

Selecting and painting the right colour is easy and intuitive, and as the player does this more colours will be revealed, allowing the loop to repeat very smoothly. I found that players quickly became engrossed in this repetitive and relaxing loop, not stopping until they had completed the whole picture.
